GenderAction is an advocacy and discussion sub-group of the Queer Alliance that works on issues facing transgender and gender-variant people. Right now our main projects are working with the Gender-Neutral Housing Comm. and Health Services, working on getting preferred name on internal university records, and making a guide for incoming trans and gender-variant students. We also help organize individual educational events and performances throughout the year. All are welcome!
QPAC (Queer Political Action Committee):
QPAC is a group of students interested in LGBTQ politics, both in RI and around the country, that meet to discuss the issues and plan educational events and political action. All are welcome!
QSJI (Queer Social Justice Initiative) (Seeking Subgroup Leader):
A group committed to social justice activism in the name of queer people of all stripes, persuasions, and bents. Our aim is provide a vehicle for action against injustices like police brutality, employment and housing discrimination, homelessness in the queer community and particularly of queer youth, access to health care and drug use, protections for queer sex workers, and more. We hope to be a force for true change and a radical reimagining of queer politics in the Brown community and the Providence community at large.
The Athletes Alliance includes both LGBTQ athletes and heterosexual allies who want to work towards creating an inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ identified students within the athletics department. Our overall goals are to help the OMAC become a safe space and assist student-athletes and coaches in knowing how to support
LGBTQ athletes so that everyone has a positive experience at Brown. We hope to provide opportunities in the future for athletes and coaches to participate in Safe Zone trainings and other programs that will bring us closer to our goals.
If you are interested in being involved in this new initiative please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is a confidential listserv that will allow us to contact everyone that shows interest with email updates and meeting times. We are looking for different levels of involvement from helping plan programs to just learning about what it means to be an ally to the LGBTQ community. Very small efforts, such as showing support to LGBTQ students can make a big difference in someone else’s life. We highly encourage all those interested in participating in open and meaningful dialogue to attend and learn more!
